World Book Day

On Thursday, 7th March the whole school came together to celebrate ‘World Book Day.’ Our theme for this year was ‘Myths and Legends,’ and there was a real buzz around the school as pupils and teachers came dressed as their favourite characters for the day, and had the chance to take part in a multitude of wonderful activities linked to reading.

Two of our Student Reading Champions created and delivered an assembly for all year groups about the benefits and importance of Reading, as well as giving pupils more information about Book Aid International, our chosen charity where half of the proceeds donated on the day are sent.

The Library created interactive displays promoting recommended reading linked to Myths and Legends and KS3 pupils have been taking part in an Ancient Greek ‘Murder Mystery’ in their Library lessons. Staff have been involved in creating a whole school ‘House’ competition called ‘The Masked Reader’ and the Student Reading Campions created a further ‘House’ competition called ‘Reading Legends’.

Curriculum subjects also got involved, with a huge range of Reading-based lessons. A flavour of the variety going on included…

  • Geography – pupils were mapping stories across the world.
  • Science – pupils were trying out different Literary techniques when learning new vocabulary in Science Literature.
  • RE – pupils were discussing ‘Philosophical Poetry’.
  • Maths – Year 8 pupils took part in a ‘Reading Speed Experiment in Maths’ and other KS3 pupils looked into Archimedes and a story based adventure with Maths problems scattered throughout.
  • Art and English – learners experienced tasks around the Greek gorgon, ‘Medusa.’
  • Mandarin – pupils dove into graded picture books and enjoyed retelling stories using their own imaginative twists.

Some quotes from learners include, “We should do one of the lessons in each topic” (Science) and, ‘Thank you for that lesson Miss; I really enjoyed it” (English).

What a fabulous day celebrating all things Books and Reading!
